Richard Branson attests: “There is no greater thing you can do with your life and your work than follow your passions – in a way that serves the world and you.” We encourage our learners to pursue their passions for singing, acting and speaking at school and endeavour to provide them with ample cultural opportunites to unveil these talents.
Wittedrift High School’s learners participate in the annual Inter-schools Group Speakers’ Competition, Senior and Junior Individual Speaker’s Competitions (in both English and Afrikaans), the Rotary Speech Competition, ATKV Redenaars and Radikale Redenaars.
These various competitions hone their skills as self-assured speakers who are willing to participate in discussions and voice their opinions.
We endeavour to produce one major cultural event, every second year, in which the school aims to involve as many learners as possible. Our most recent success was with the 2019 Oklahoma! Musical Production.
Staging the Oklahoma! production was, undoubtedly, one of the highlights of the WHS 2019 calendar. The initially daunting task soon turned into exhilarating weekly rehearsals. The show’s roaring success can be attributed to a team of dedicated educators and the discovery of, heretofore unknown, talent. Admittedly, there were countless sleepless nights, moments of sheer panic and (especially towards the end) utter exhaustion. All of that, though, was tempered by witnessing the unbridled joy and unquestioning commitment of the phenomenal cast. We are incredibly grateful for the overwhelming support we received from the Plettenberg Bay community – both shows were sold out and the audiences were highly appreciative. We were truly humbled by the generosity of some of Plett’s business people for donations, assistance and input. Our extraordinary young people impressed the audience as much as they impressed their educators. We hope to see YOU at the next performance of this small school with the huge heart.
Additionally, during 2015, a number of learners were selected to participate in an international musical video competition, produced by the famous American singer, Pharrel Williams. The learners had a great opportunity to showcase their talents and our school placed under the Top 10 in the country!
